Generally an exterior wood doors can perform well if properly protected and maintained.
Manufacturer require adequate overhang to protect the door from excessive sunlight and rain and also suggest to fully finish the doors to increase its durability. There is no information from the manufacturer to suggest against Midwest area.
Please read the warranty for the limits of use.

both doors can open on the double door unit. However, the active door opens with handle and the inactive door would open by releasing the flush bolt pin.
If the door have a handing, it means that the active door will swing to the right/left or inside/outside.
Double doors with ball catch would not need any handing as both opens.
