What are Shaker style interior doors?
The Shakers were a religious movement known for their simple lifestyle, and that simplicity is woven into their furniture and architecture. But never make the mistake that “simple” means “poorly-made”. Shaker doors, like all of Shaker cultural artifacts, were designed to be extremely long-lasting, functional, with a friendly and peaceful beauty.
Shaker interior doors are known for their straight 90-degree angles at every point. There is no embellishment or wasted wood for added decor, and that’s what makes them so entrancing. These doors, though they may have one panel or three, are minimalist, and if you didn’t know the rich history of the Shaker movement you might make the mistake of thinking that Shaker interior doors are modern minimalist masterpieces. (They are masterpieces, and they are minimalist, but they most certainly aren’t modern.)
The beauty of the Shaker interior door has been admired, reproduced, copied, and spread throughout the world--far beyond the imaginings of the small religious group of the 1800s who were simply looking for a practical and sturdy asset to their homes.
What are Shaker panel doors?
Shaker panel doors are simply Shaker doors with more than one panel. These panels are cope-and-stick construction, and a door may have between one and three panels. (Shaker panels are also used in Shaker panel cabinets).
Shaker panel doors use straight and true boards with no visible craftsman’s marks, and with basic, yet attractive hardware. A Shaker style panel door may have a simple round knob, an iron latch, a wooden pull, or any other number of fixtures--the point is that they were not made to be showy, but to display the humility of the Shakers as they did not believe that the outward appearance of an object was what was important to God.
In this way, Shaker panel doors and other Shaker furniture have been compared to the craftsmanship of the Amish. Although coming from a different region of New England, the two groups both held to principles of simplicity over showmanship, and quality over quantity.
Are Shaker doors solid?
A traditional Shaker door is definitely solid, though some modern makers have taken the Shaker aesthetic and copied it in ways that the original Shakers would not have built. While a Shaker today would admire the frugality of the no-fluff hollow doors, they would not have built them that way themselves. They used solid wood in all aspects of the Shaker interior door.
