How to Install Interior Door in 10 Steps

Installing an interior door is easy upgrade that can dramatically improve the appearance of your home.

Here's a list of the tools you'll need to complete the project
Utility Knife
Tape Measure
Four Foot level
Painting Paintbrush
Shims
Hammer or Nail Gun
Safety Glass
Don't forget to wear a proper eye protection when using hand tools
Step 1 Measure Opening

Once you remove your old door frame, take the opening measurements and give them to your local home improvement retailer. They'll be able to assist you in choosing the right size product for your home.
Step 2 Check Measurement

When you receive your new interior door you'll need to remove the packaging. Measure the door and component pieces to ensure the product is the right size.
Step 3 Paint Door

Interior doors come pre-primed so this is a good time to put up a coat of paint on the door and component pieces.
Step 4 Build Frame

Place the door and component pieces on the ground with the hinge side down and align the strike j
Step 5 Position Door in Opening

Position the door in opening and place temporary shims to secure it into place
Step 6 Level Door with Shims

At this point make sure the door is level and plumb. You’ll also want to ensure proper spacing along the door opening about 1/8 inch and adjust the shims accordingly
Step 7 Fasten Jamb with Finishing Nail

Once the door is positioned correctly, fasten the jam with finishing nail. Start on the hinge side. Work your way around the door nailing the frame through the shims.
Step 8 Secure Door Stop

Secure the remaining door stop to the strike jamb
Step 9 Remove Shims and Install Trim

Sore and break off the remaining shares and replace the old trim
Step 10 Install Hardware

Finally install the door hardware according to the manufacturer's instructions.
